The first teacher feels that social-emotional development provides the foundation for how each child feels about themselves. She also feels that social and emotional development helps children begin to understand who they are, what they are feeling, what they expect to receive from others? She believes that young children’s social-emotional development influences all other areas of development such as, cognitive, motor, and language development are all greatly affected by how a child feels about him/ herself and how she or he is able to express ideas and emotions. She feels that the greatest influence on a child’s social-emotional development is the quality of the relationships that he or she develops with their parents, primary caregiver, family members, and caretaker. She thinks that the positive and nurturing early experiences and relationships have a significant impact on the child’s social-emotional development.
The second teacher that I interviewed feels about the same as the first. Their views are pretty much the same when it comes to social and emotional development in young children. This teacher feels that when a child social and emotional skill is well-developed they are able to express their ideas and feelings. The child is also able to manage his or her feelings of frustration and disappointment more easily. She says that it is very import to help young children develop these skills so that they can have self-confident so that they can easily make and develop friendships and succeed in school. She believes that emotions play an important role in forming a relationship that affect how young children learn. Lauren Jackson feels that before they learn the academic skills they need to learn their social skills. They need to learn how to iniaties conversation, ask and answer questions. Most elementary schools teacher always look for this when the child first enter in grade school. They feel that once the child enters they should already have an idea of how to get along with other children.
I think that social and emotional development in young children is very important. Children need to learn to use words to express themselves in a safe way and also learn how to show empathy for others as well as feeling good about themselves.
ReplyDeleteWhat is your advocacy plan about?I agree that children need to have a strong confident with yourself. It is important for children to be raised with a proper sense of social and emotional development and this usually comes from strong parenting skills.
ReplyDeleteHello Brenda Bennett,
ReplyDeleteit seems that with yous social emotional advocacy plan that you have a head start about what you plan on doing. The professionals that you interviewed gave their views, now it is time to consider what you have learned from them, and how you want to complete your plan.
Self regulation is a real issue with children that appear or do have social emotional issues, we as educators will do well to address these issues and help to find a solution. I have seen many children with social emotional issues who have behavior issues as well, when we tackle one set of issues it will help us as we advocate for the other.
I think social/ emotional is very important and a great topic. Actually I look at social/ emotional development as something that I work on with my students and guide them. I feel that when students go home, as educators we don’t know what actually goes on in their household when students leave your classroom and are at home for the next 13-15 hours. Building confident and talking out our feelings is something I try to do in the classroom because I would my students to feel comfortable with me and build a relationship.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a class I took last quarter and it gave my techniques and strategies to use to build on students social/emotional development such as singing songs, allowing students to write in their journals, drawing pictures on how they might feel, acting out scripts, games that allows students to identify different emotions and even dancing. All these forms are not just Art but also helps student to open up and express their feelings and socialize with others in their class.
I agree that social-emotional is very important for young children. Children socialize when they attend school. Some children may not show their emotions until they get a little older. Some children are shy and they really don't talk to a lot of people until they get to know them.
ReplyDeleteBrenda,
ReplyDeleteSocial/emotional development is such a great topic. I chose the same topic to do my research paper about. Through their social/emotional development children learn how to use their words to express themselves, get along with other, how to solve problems, and control their emotions. When you observe in a classroom it is very easy to pick out the children who are not at the social/emotional stage that they need to be. Usually they are children who cannot sit in their seats, are constantly walking around the room, and not interacting properly with other children. This topic has received a lot of attention in the past five years concerning kindergarten readiness because the teachers are saying that they can teach a child the necessary academic studies but they will have problems teaching twenty students to sit still. I look forward to reading your insights.
